OPEN CALL FOR VISUAL ARTISTS

FOR A SIX-WEEK RESIDENCY IN LONDON

1 – ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

The Delfina Foundation facilitates artistic exchange between the UK and the Middle East & North Africa via artist residencies and public programmes.

Previous Syrian artists-in-residence in London included Fadi Yazigi, Hala Muhanna, Nisrine Boukhari and Muhammad Ali.   The Delfina Foundation also sent Tobias Collier, Mario Cuesta, Mar Solis and Michael Windle to Damascus for residencies at Mustafa Ali Art Foundation and AllArtNow.

The Delfina Foundation, in collaboration with AllArtNow and the British Council, are offering a visual artist, aged between 25 and 40 years old, a six-week residency in London this summer. We are seeking applications from artists living and working in Syria.  The selected artist will be provided with:

·      one round-trip flight;

·      accommodation and a shared studio space in London;

·      an enabling bursary of £1,500 to cover the basic costs of living in London for six weeks; and

·      personal and professional support during the residency.

The ideal candidate:

·         will be an emerging to mid-career artist, seeking an opportunity to research and develop a creative idea;

·         be able to explain how the experience of an international residency in London may benefit their practice and career development; and

·         be able to demonstrate basic English proficiency.

Artistic quality and development potential will be key selection criteria.

The residency will begin on the 27th July for six weeks.  The dates are fixed and not flexible.

Following the residency in London, the artist will be engaged in a future project with AllArtNow in Damascus.

4 – ABOUT THE PARTNERS

The Delfina Foundation facilitates artistic exchange between the UK and the Middle East & North Africa through two inter-related activities:

• A residency program that develops opportunities for artists and cultural practitioners to further the practice and philosophy of their work; and
• A public program that explores the link between visual culture and civic society through exhibitions, talks, and new commissions.

Founded by Delfina Entrecanales in 2007, Delfina Foundation has had artists in residence from ten countries of the Middle East and it has sent UK artists for residencies in the region as well.
Previous Syrian artists-in-residence include Fadi Yazigi, Hala Muhanna, Nisrine Boukhari and Muhammad Ali.

The Delfina Foundation also sent Tobias Collier, Mario Cuesta, Mar Solis and Michael Windle to Syria for residencies at Mustafa Ali Art Foundation and AllArtNow.

Delfina Foundation is the successor to Delfina Studios, which nurtured the development of over 400 international artists over its 20-year existence, including more than a dozen Turner Prize nominees.  Delfina Foundation aims to develop the next generation of artists.

AllArtNow is considered to be the first independent collective space in Syria for visual arts, multimedia and contemporary arts.   Founded in 2005 by Abir Boukhari, the initiative aims to create greater opportunities for emerging Syrian artists and the development of the contemporary arts practice in Syria.

A neglected house in the old city of Damascus serves as AllArtNow’s laboratory for art:  it is a hub for emerging artistic practice and serves as a meeting point for local and international artists to exchange creative ideas and form collaborations.  To date, AllArtNow has succeeded in creating opportunities for artists in Syria and abroad.
